Mysterious underground passages drawn by Leonardo da Vinci found
Under the Sforza Castle, scientists have discovered mysterious underground passages that may correspond to Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings.

Mysterious underground passages that could have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci himself have been discovered by researchers under the Sforza Castle in Milan. This is reported by Live Science.

It is believed that they were part of early military defenses, and there may be even more underground spaces than is currently known.

The Sforza Castle, built in the 14th century, has changed many times over the centuries. Around 1495, the Milanese ruler involved da Vinci in working on the castle, and among his sketches were found plans for fortifications with numerous passages, data about which was lost over time.

Architectural historian Francesca Biolo and a team of researchers used laser scanning, GPS, 3D radar and photogrammetry to create a digital model of the dungeons. As a result, they discovered an additional level with rooms and a previously unknown passage that may correspond to Leonardo’s sketch.

“Leonardo da Vinci was well-versed in military structures and defense systems of his time. His sketch clearly shows the main part of the castle, as well as numerous passages. However, it is impossible to determine the exact extent of Leonardo’s involvement in the creation of the structures of the Milanese fortress,” Biolo explained.

According to her, research is ongoing, and there are probably still hidden passages under the castle, but excavations are not possible at this time.
